Quarantine

Castel del'Ovo, Napoli

Coming and going is an investigation of migration and identity, with particular reference to Liverpool and four other ‘Cities on the Edge’: Marseille, Istanbul, Gdansk and Napoli. Over a fortnight in November we’ll be presenting an programme of inter-connected events in Liverpool as part of the Capital of Culture programme.

Quarantine will work with Liverpool families from a wide range of different communities to present five ritual meals in their homes. There might be a Polish Easter meal, an Eid celebration, a British Sunday roast, or a Chinese Spring festival celebration. Sociologist Dr Zafer Yenal from Istanbul, an expert on food and its relationship to cultural history, will be at each meal to eat, talk and interpret. Ali Taptik, a young photographer from Istanbul, will visit all five cities and make images responding to ideas about migration, particularly focusing on food as a cultural identifier. The programme will culminate in a ‘gathering’ with a panel of artists, experts and experts in everyday life, followed by a concert curated by Dro Kilndjian of MarsAtac (Marseille) featuring Turkish, Armenian and UK musicians. Broadcasting into and out of each event over the whole fortnight will be Radio Grenouille from Marseille, with music, sounds, stories, voices and recipes from all five cities.

Coming and going is a collaboration between Quarantine and FKuk, supported by Liverpool Capital of Culture 2008.
